Die steinerne Brücke bei Schnee
Six eventful towns and cities in East Bavaria

Not only hikers, cyclists and passengers on river cruises find ideal conditions in East Bavaria, but also those who travel in search of cultural experience. This region has many towns and cities which are steeped in history, six of which we're going to present here.

Amberg in the Upper Palatinate – a climatic art resort

There are plenty of climatic health resorts – but Amberg in the Upper Palatinate is a climatic art resort. And that is unique. The town, whose mediaeval core is among the best preserved in Europe, has devoted itself to the phenomenon of air in an interactive permanent exhibition of its own. The private air museum is in the middle of this charming old town and right on the River Vils. A guided tour through the streets of the old town by torchlight is highly recommendable. It's an experience full of atmosphere, in which customers can admire the mediaeval curtain wall with its gates, almost completely preserved, and the marketplace with its Gothic town hall at dusk. Another appealing option is a boat trip on the Vils, a so-called plättenfahrt, in which your customers travel through the town on an old timber working boat.

Mit dem Cabrio durch die Kurve an der Ruselbergstraße nahe Deggendorf

Deggendorf – gateway to the Bavarian Forest

This East Bavarian town lies on two delightful rivers – the Danube and the Isar. And it is a good starting point for walks through the Bavarian Forest. If your customers like culture but also wish to be outdoors in Nature, recommend Deggendorf to them, because all around this town they can go hiking in the mountains or cycling along the rivers. There are many stand-up paddlers on the Isar, and the quality of the water in the rivers is so good that people can go swimming at several places. Since time immemorial, the heart of the old town in Deggendorf has formed an elongated market, in the middle of which the historical Old Town Hall stands – and that is where the life of this Bavarian town unfolds in summer. A tip: the farmers' market on Saturday mornings in particular will give pleasure to your customers. And by the way: a particularly large number of different kinds of dumpling are served in Deggendorf's restaurants. There's a fountain in the town on which a female dumpling thrower stands. But that is a thing your customers would do best to ask about when they get there.

Landshut Collegiate Basilica of St. Martin

Landshut: a town on the Isar with a castle and a grandiose princely wedding

The highest brick church tower in the world, Trausnitz Castle, the biggest historical festival in Germany, and the Isar right in the middle of the town: Landshut has many superlatives, including colourful gabled houses from the 15th and 16th centuries and winding lanes. Every four years the Landshut Wedding is celebrated, the next time being in July 2023: 2,000 citizens take part in this historical spectacle, which goes on for several weeks. Wearing apparel from the late Middle Ages, they reenact the grandiose princely wedding of Duke George the Rich of Landshut to the Polish princess Hedwig in 1475; with horses, knights' games and dancing, processions, the entrance of the bride and thousands of spectators every day. The Landshut Wedding has been taking place since 1905 and is the largest mediaeval festival in the republic.

Surprises wherever you look: the castle ruin of Wolfstein, an aristocratic castle from the 12th century, sits enthroned 150 metres above Neumarkt. Visitors to this museum can marvel at all aspects of the history, tradition and culture of veal sausages. A few lanes further on, in the brewery museum, visitors can learn about beer culture. And there's another unusual museum awaiting your customers in Neumarkt: the museum of historical Maybach vehicles, unique worldwide. Then, on round the town on foot on the beer and nature trail. By the way, Neumarkt is just 40 minutes by car from Nuremberg Airport, so it can easily be reached from abroad too.

Passau als Drei Flüsse Stadt liegt mitten im Wasser

Passau: by bicycle or boat into the city of three rivers

The largest cathedral organ in the world, the fortress 'Veste Oberhaus', an enchanting old town and a unique location at the confluence of three rivers: the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz: Passau is not just a destination for fans of art and culture, but also for cyclists and passengers on Danube river cruises. Two popular long-distance cycle paths, the Danube cycle path and the Inn cycle path, run through this university city. Well signposted, the former winds its way along both banks: downstream towards Vienna with a tailwind and then on to the Black Sea. Upstream, day trips to Deggendorf and other outings towards Regensburg and Ingolstadt or Dillingen are popular. The Inn cycle path runs 520 kilometres through the Alps – from St. Moritz via Innsbruck to Passau. The many river cruises which begin and end in the marina of this Lower Bavarian city are idyllic. If you go ashore here you will be in the old town in just a few minutes on foot, and you will be amazed. What's more: the 250-kilometre Crystal Road, which will take your customers through the country around Passau and to places which have been dedicated to glass manufacture for many generations, also starts in Passau.

Winterliches Regensburg an der Donau

Regensburg: UNESCO World Heritage city on the Danube

On one side of the Danube lies the mediaeval old town of Regensburg with its patrician tower houses, 50 metres high, and the Gothic St. Peter's Cathedral. On the other, the district of Stadtamhof with its spacious parks and houses in the architectural style that is typical of the Upper Palatinate. They are connected by the Middle Age wonder of the world, the famous Stone Bridge. Together, they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Many visitors come by boat, for Regensburg features Bavaria's largest marina for river cruises. Day trips are also a good option for a leisurely exploration of the area, for example to the two halls of fame built by King Ludwig I. Upstream, he had the Walhalla built on the model of the Acropolis in Athens as a memorial to distinguished German personalities; downstream, in Kelheim, the Hall of Liberation on the Michelsberg.
