Those who like being on the go in the clear, cold winter air, seeing the snow glitter in the sunshine and letting their gaze wander over whitewashed landscapes get a shine in their eyes at the very thought of the next winter journey. And there are many good reasons to recommend Bavaria as a destination to winter sport fans! As well as the larger, better known skiing areas in the Bavarian Alps, the regions of the Swabian and Franconian Jura with their gentle hills, the East Bavarian uplands and the foothills of the Alps also beckon with the diversity and beauty of winter. There's not only alpine downhill skiing on the agenda, but also the pleasure of cross-country skiiing on excellently prepared tracks and snowshoe hikes in the quiet of the forest. Among the great advantages of Bavaria is this reliable assurance of snow: depending on the altitude, the season begins in November and continues in some places right on into late April.
