Artist Werner Härtl paints with cow manure and no, his paintings don’t stink!
Meet the Bavarian “cow manure artist”
When Werner Härtl runs out of paint for his paintings, he doesn't have to walk far: He puts on his battered straw hat, grabs a plastic canister with a funnel attached and strolls into the farmer's cowshed next door. Then he just has to wait. As soon as one of the animals' tails goes up, it's time for him to quickly hold the funnel underneath and catch what falls out. Because Werner's specialty is paintings with cow dung. His specialty is - how could it be otherwise - nostalgic agricultural motifs, such as old farms and the Bavarian landscape with its characteristic fields, pastures and meadows.
Werner's Bavarian experience
Getting creative with sh*t
The intriguing sepia tone of Werner Härtl’s paintings has a suprising reason: The artist uses cow poop as paint for his rural scenes, adding gold leaf for extra sparkle. Hard to believe? No problem, his studio near Bad Tölz is open to visitors to see his works and learn all about his fascinating technique.
