Stefan Stretz's cosy pub has revived an almost forgotten part of Nuremberg.
Innkeeper Stefan Stretz
Stefan is the manager of the brewery and the Schanzenbräu pub. After studying and living in Berlin for ten years, the trained brewer and graduate engineer in brewing technology returned to his home town of Nuremberg 20 years ago. He set up his grandmother's old washing kettle in the cellar of a workshop and started brewing beer. Today, his Schanzenbräu is the second largest beer producer in the city. In 2008, Stefan opened his Schanzenbräu pub and beer garden on the site of an open air venue in Nuremberg's trendy Gostenhof district. There, beer innovations such as "Rotbier" or "Blonder Baron" meet classic Franconian beers and creative reinventions of traditional home cooking. "The Schanzenbräu is so popular because it is down-to-earth and has a cosy charm - not too fancy, not too stressful. The pub simply promises a good time with the locals.
Stefan's Bavarian experience
Behind the scenes of a modern brewery
Soak up the cosy atmosphere and see how beer is made - Stefan's Schanzenbräu brewery is the perfect place to get a behind-the-scenes look at brewing. Afterwards you can enjoy the beers with delicious local food at the pub of the same name in the Gostenhof district.
Stefan's insider tip
Don't miss the opportunity to get to know Nuremberg on foot. I highly recommend a hike to the Glatzenstein viewpoint, which is 572 metres above sea level. From there you can see the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets!
